Using A Scientific Approach to Improving Science Instruction

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) uses a "studio" model of instruction for the approximately 1000 engineering and science students per term taking the calculus-based introductory physics sequence. The defining characteristics of the Studio Physics courses at RPI are: An integrated lecture/laboratory/recitation class structure Hands-on, active-engagement learning Minimization of time spent lecturing Extensive student-student and student-faculty interaction during class time Effective use of technology in the classroom The studio approach was first introduced at RPI almost ten years ago. We have extensively assessed student learning and satisfaction in these courses. The results of these assessments, a detailed description of the course, and the importance of taking a scientific approach to curricular
