Physics 150 Laboratory Schedule

The Physics 150 labs start date is TBA!

The Physics 150 lab lectures start on September 14, 1999.
If you are in sections 1 or 2 of Physics 150, go to the Tuesday, 11 AM lab lecture. All other students in all other sections (and in Physics 170) should attend the identical lecture on Tuesday at 6 PM. All lab lectures are held in DRL A1.

Please check this page for updated information after September 10, 1999.

The first two lab experiments have mini-reports due the week after your data-taking is finished.

Lab reports for subsequent sessions are typically due one week after the entire lab is finished, e.g. lab report for The Pendulum is due at beginning of lab experiment 4. If a lab experiment takes two weeks to complete, then the report is usually due the week after the final data-taking is done. Note that your T.A. is the final arbiter of when work is due! You must consult with your T.A. on due dates, especially for makeup labs!

Pre-lab assignments for each laboratory experiment after the first two are in your lab manuals. Your first pre-lab assignment will be due at the beginning of the session for the 3rd experiment.

If you are in doubt as to what is due on any given week, consult your T.A.!

Policies on Laboratories

  1. Be sure to attend the lab lectures. T.A.'s are not expected to repeat information which has been given in the lab lecture. You should prepare for each laboratory and part of the preparation is getting information given in the lab lecture.
  2. You must attend the first meeting of your lab section! Failure to attend means that your slot in that section is released for use by any other student who shows up for the first meeting of that section. If you know that you cannot attend your first meeting, contact the lab instructor immediately, but certainly before your first lab section meets.
  3. Bring paper, a calculator, a clear plastic ruler, millimeter lined graph paper, your lab manual, and a proper lab notebook to the laboratory.
  4. A proper lab notebook should have ruled paper. The pages must be bound to the notebook backing (i.e. folders, loose papers stapled or clipped together, or clasp notebooks are NOT allowed). Each page of the notebook must be stamped with a page number by the notebook manufacturer! Writing in your own page numbers is not sufficient. The point here is that it must not be possible to remove pages from the notebook without leaving some indication that pages are missing. Check the university bookstore in the section where your lab manual is sold for lab notebooks of the proper type.
  5. Lab notebooks will be collected near the end of the semester. If you do not turn in a proper lab notebook when requested, you will receive a failing grade for the lab! If you wish to recover your lab notebook in the semester after you take the lab, send e-mail to your lab instructor. The pages with your data will be removed before the notebook is returned.
  6. Do not tamper with settings on the computer. If something does not work, consult your T.A. Repeated tampering by individuals may lead to a grade penalty.
  7. If you discover that you need some piece of data you don't have, you can only take this data during a time when a lab (not necessarily your own) is in session. The T.A. for this section must be made aware that this is your purpose if you attend any lab session other than the one you are scheduled for. T.A.'s have the option of excluding any students that are not regularly scheduled for their sections.
  8. To receive a passing grade for Physics 150 you must receive a passing grade for the laboratory. You cannot pass the laboratory unless all labs are done! Department policy says that if you fail the lab course for any reason, you must retake the entire lab course over again. If you know that you must miss your regularly scheduled lab, communicate with your T.A. to see if you can arrange to do the lab at a different section during the week. If this is not possible, you must communicate with the lab instructor to schedule a makeup lab. Makeup lab times will occur Wed-Fri. during the week before Spring break and near the end of the semester. These makeup times MUST be scheduled with the lab instructor to ensure that the proper experimental equipment is available for you.
