This delicate museum piece is an electrostatic generator which is capable of accumulating large amounts of positive and negative charge. It is essentially a system of electrophorus plates which operate in a continuous fashion. The drive wheel must be turned in one direction only and must not be turned too fast (one revolution per second is good).
