A solenoid is mounted on a glass plate suitable for overhead projection. The solenoid is connected to a 6VDC battery and a momentary switch. Randomly sprinkle some iron filings around the solenoid, close the switch and tap the plate. A map of magnetic field lines around the solenoid will be projected on the screen.
