The apparatus is sufficiently large that the resultant motion of the conductors may be observed from all parts of the lecture room. The current flowing in the conductors is provided by the 115 DC line, appropriate limits being mounted by a bank of resistors. A large knife switch is provided to reverse the direction of the current and therefore the direction of forces exerted in each conductor.
