This is used to demonstrate gravitational acceleration. Attached to the side of the large Atwood's machine is a mechanism for dropping a ball. The falling ball can be viewed with a strobe, so that the increasing displacements are more clearly visible.
As an alternative, a tennis ball can be dropped from different heights and clocked with the large timer.
