Condensed Matter Seminar: "Striped Ground States in the Hubbard Model"

Solving the 2D Hubbard model is one of the most well-known outstanding problems in theoretical condensed matter physics. Various simulation techniques, such has DMRG and quantum Monte Carlo, have made dramatic strides in recent years, but they have still not provided clearcut answers for the nature of the ground state of the strong-coupling doped model. Recently, we have combined the efforts of four different simulation techniques to attack this problem.  We have found a suprising degree of agreement between all the methods.  Since the weaknesses of the different methods, in the form of uncontrolled errors, are quite different for each of the methods, the agreement gives us substantial confidence that we finally have the right answer.  The results agree with many of the features of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, but with some notable differences, pointing towards a need to refine the model.
