"Controversy in Science: When scientists disagree, what's the poor journalist to do?"

Controversy, science and the media can be a volatile mix that both causes and reflects a deep misunderstanding of the scientific process.  I'll examine three areas of controversy the PBS science series NOVA has been involved in -- evolution, climate change and the multiverse -- and try to illuminate the role of the journalist in handling them. Using clips from NOVA as well as other television programs and feature films, I'll explore what goes on behind the scenes when controversy rears its ugly head and what we do to make sense of the science for the viewing public.
