Research: Equipment

The major equipment in this laboratory consists of

• an atomic force microscope with environmental control,
• an optical microscope setup for fluorescence imaging of single nanoscale particles and
• five variable temperature cryostats (Janis Research) for electrical and optical measurements from 300 mK to 800 K and magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla, including a closed-cycle helium cryostat.

There is also a chemistry room with fume hoods, gloveboxes and other equipment for nanoparticle synthesis and characterization.


The David Rittenhouse Laboratory (DRL) hosts a range of equipment including a high-performance electron beam lithography machine and photolithography equipment.
It has also a professional machine shop


In the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter (LRSM) there are additional user facilities that can be used for sample preparation and characterization. These include: scanning-probe microscopes (STM, AFM, MFM), and electron microscopes (SEM, TEM).


There is a Microfabrication Laboratory with a class 1000 cleanroom. The equipment includes: pattern generator for producing photo-masks, sputtering systems, e-beam evaporators, diffusion furnaces, plasma etching equipment, and standard photolithography systems.
