Quantum Condensed Matter Theory
The theory group at Penn studies electronic phenomena in low dimensional systems, where the motion of the electrons is geometrically confined to two, one or even zero dimensions. This occurs in many physical systems, for example at the surfaces of solids, in nanostructures and in molecular solids. These systems often exhibit electronic properties not found in ordered three dimensional cystals. The theoretical methods used in our work range from first principles electronic structure methods to the investigation of effective field theories to describe the low energy excitations in these systems.
