The Parks and Recreation Department of Jenkintown held their annual fishing derby in Alvethorpe Park June 5, 2004.
The weather could have been a little better, but the kids did not mind. It rained the entire morning and surprisingly a good number of young children participated, estimated at 30 to 40 kids, plus their parents. In Cheltenham the Kleindients Pond Fishing Derby was postponed to the following Saturday because of the rain.
Our TU chapter had 5 members helping out, Sam Shields, Ray Young, Joe Veasey, Joe Bradley and Walt Kononenko. Special thanks should be given to Joe Bradley, who was the derby's official fish weigher and to Sam Shields for having his flytying station set up
and showed the kids and their parents the fine art of fly tying. We also had a photo display of our participation from previous Alvathorpe fishing derbies, with some photos going back 5 to 6 years. This was a big hit with the kids, parents and the Park staff.
