On March 13, 2001 we had our monthly Chapter meeting and after the normal business reports we dedicated the rest of the evening to refurbishing the bamboo-cane kid's fishing rods for the Township of Cheltenhan, Dept. of Recreation's fishing derby, which will be held the first Saturday in June. This Saturday is a 'Free fishing Day" that is sponsored by the State of Pennsylvania along with cooperation of the many local communities, TU chapters and other clubs across the state. Many of these organizations even go as far as specifically stocking fish for these derbies. The main objective is to allow the young people to have fun. Quite often this is the way young kids get introduced to fishing at an early age. We are there to provide moral support, to hook on a few worms, to unhook a few fish and to help in making sure it's a safe and enjoyable event. We hope that these fishing derbies' introduction to fishing would allow the kids' to develope a lifelong interest in fishing and the outdoors. George Benson, a member of our Chapter, is our contact person with the Cheltenhan Township. This is the second year that our chapter is refurbishing the cane rods for the township. As you see from the photos below the members enjoyed the activity and the energy that go into such refurbishing.
