Profs. Mark Devlin and Mark Trodden were guests on WHYY's Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane broadcast.  They discussed a recent discovery about the inflationary period of the early universe.  Audio of the broadcast is here.

Mirjam Cvetic elected to European Academy

Prof. Mirjam Cvetič has been elected to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts for her scientific contributions to high energy theoretical physics, in particular in the field of string theory compatification and black hole physics.

P&A grad students win DCF fellowships

Carl Goodrich and Marius Lungu, graduate students in the Physics & Astronomy department, have been awarded Dissertation Completion Fellowships from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  DCF awards are made on the basis of academic excellence as evaluated by the SAS Committee on Graduate Education and support students in the final year of their graduate career. 

Penn team device aids individualized care for stroke victims

A Penn-designed device has been shown to noninvasively and continuously monitor cerebral blood flow in acute stroke patients.  This may make possible individualized care that aids physicians in achieving effective recovery. Prof. Arjun Yodh leads the P&A team that contributed to this study.

Former grad student in feature film

Dr. Monica Dunford, who received her PhD at Penn working on the Solar Neutrino Observatory with Profs. Gene Beier and Josh Klein, is one of "six brilliant physicists" followed during the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider in the feature film "Particle Fever".

Winner of NSF EAPSI Fellowship, Zhenqing Qi

Zhengqing John Qi, a doctoral candidate in Charlie Johnson's group, was awarded an NSF EAPSI Fellowship for 2014.  John's research focuses on the electronic and structural properties of atomically resolved sub-10 nm graphene nanostructures to help enable rational decision-making as to graphene's utility in next generation high performance devices. He was a past recipient of the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship, NSF IGERT Fellowship and Penn's GAPSA-Provost Fellowship.

Penn selects Alison Sweeney for Packard application

The University has selected Asst. Prof. Alison Sweeney to apply for a Packard Foundation Fellowship in Science and Engineering.  The Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering provide the nation’s most promising early-career scientists and engineers with flexible funding and the freedom to take risks and explore new frontiers in their fields of study.

Promotion for Elliot Lipeles

The department is pleased to announce that Asst. Prof. Elliot Lipeles has been approved for promotion to Assoc. Prof. with tenure at the last meeting of the Provost's Staff Conference. With approval of the President and Trustees, he will become P&A's newest tenured faculty member on July 1, 2014.
