Studies of string theory compactifications suggest that certain “vertical” homological intersection pairings of Calabi-Yau manifolds are invariant under a large set of birational transformations. In this talk, I will discuss the balance of mathematical and physical evidence supporting this conclusion, as well as possible applications to the study of string vacua in various dimensions. (Based on W.I.P. with Manki Kim (MIT) and Washington Taylor (MIT).)
